Your fuse board is the control centre of your home's electrical system. It's what protects your circuits, your appliances, and most importantly, you and your family. If yours is old, outdated, or causing you problems, a fuse board upgrade could be one of the most worthwhile electrical improvements you make. Here's everything you need to know, from the team at T.A.A Electrical Services.
What's the difference between a fuse board and a consumer unit? Older properties often have what most people call a fuse box, which is a board with rewirable ceramic fuses or older MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) that offer limited protection. A modern consumer unit uses RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and RCBOs alongside MCBs to provide a much higher level of protection against electric shock and fire. If yours still has the old style ceramic fuses, an upgrade isn't just a good idea. It's strongly advisable.
Signs you may need a fuse board upgrade
Your fuses trip frequently or keep blowing. If you find yourself resetting the same circuit regularly, something isn't right. It could be an issue with the circuit itself or with the board's ability to handle the load being put through it.
You want to add new circuits. Planning to install an EV charger, add a new bathroom, or extend your property? Any new circuits need to be added to a consumer unit that meets current regulations. If yours doesn't, an upgrade will be part of the job.
You've had an EICR that flagged your consumer unit. This is one of the most common outcomes of an electrical inspection, particularly in older properties across South London and Surrey. If your report has come back with a C1 or C2 code relating to your board, it needs addressing promptly.
Your board doesn't have RCD protection. Modern regulations require RCD-protected boards in domestic properties. RCDs can detect a fault and cut the power in as little as 40 milliseconds, which is fast enough to prevent a serious injury. If your board doesn't have this, you're not as protected as you should be.
Your board looks old, damaged, or shows signs of overheating. Any visible scorching, melted plastic, or unusual smells around your fuse board should be treated as urgent.
What does the upgrade involve? A consumer unit replacement is typically a day's work for one of our engineers. We'll disconnect and isolate the supply, remove the old unit, install the new consumer unit, reconnect all circuits, and carry out full testing before handing over. You'll receive a Minor Works or Electrical Installation Certificate on completion, which is important for your records, your insurance, and any future property sale.
Is it disruptive? The power will need to be off for most of the day, so we always recommend booking in advance and planning around it. Our team works efficiently and we'll always aim to have you back up and running as quickly as possible.
Is it worth it? Without question. A modern consumer unit gives you better protection, greater reliability, and the peace of mind that your home meets current safety standards. It can also be a requirement when selling a property or making an insurance claim, so it's well worth having sorted.
