Does Your Home Need Rewiring? Here's How to Tell
Target keyword: house rewire South London / rewiring a home Croydon / electrician rewire Surrey
Your home's wiring is one of those things that's easy to forget about. It's hidden behind walls and ceilings, quietly doing its job. But like anything, it ages. And when electrical wiring gets old, it can become one of the most serious safety hazards in your home. At T.A.A Electrical Services, rewiring is one of our most common jobs across South London, Surrey, West Sussex and Kent, and we want to help you know when it's time to act.
How long does wiring actually last? Modern wiring, installed correctly, should last around 25 to 40 years. However, many properties across South London and the surrounding areas still have wiring that's significantly older than that. This is particularly common in Victorian and Edwardian terraces in areas like Bromley, Croydon, and Caterham. Older wiring types such as rubber-insulated cables degrade over time and simply aren't safe by today's standards.
Signs your home may need a rewire
If your property is over 25 to 30 years old and has never been rewired, that alone is a strong reason to have it assessed. But beyond age, here are some of the warning signs we come across most often.
Persistent flickering or dimming lights, especially across multiple rooms, can point to deteriorating wiring or overloaded circuits. The odd flickering bulb is usually nothing, but if it keeps happening it's worth getting checked out.
Burning smells or scorch marks around sockets and switches are a red flag that should never be ignored. If you notice this, switch off at the mains and call us straight away.
Regularly tripping circuits or blown fuses suggest your electrical system is struggling to keep up with the demands being placed on it. This is a common issue in older homes that simply weren't designed with today's appliance loads in mind.
A lack of earthing on older rubber or fabric-covered cables is a serious issue. If you can see any wiring of this type in your loft or around your consumer unit, it's time to get it looked at.
If you're planning a renovation or extension, this is often the best time to rewire. Whether you're doing building work in Purley, Haywards Heath, Crawley or elsewhere, sorting the wiring at the same time makes far more sense than coming back to it later.
What does a rewire involve? A full rewire means replacing all of the existing cables throughout the property, installing new sockets, switches, and light fittings where needed, and fitting a new modern consumer unit. It's a significant job, but our team works cleanly and methodically to keep disruption to a minimum. We'll always talk you through the process before we start so you know exactly what to expect.
Do I need to move out? Not necessarily. For smaller properties it's often possible to work around you room by room. For larger jobs, we'll give you honest advice on what's most practical.
Can I get a certificate when it's done? Absolutely. Every rewire carried out by T.A.A Electrical Services is fully certified and compliant with BS 7671 wiring regulations. As a NAPIT certified contractor, all our work is inspected, tested, and properly documented, giving you, your insurer, and any future buyers complete peace of mind.
